Based in the outskirts of Madrid, Getafe CF was founded in 1983. After fighting their way through amateur leagues and lower tiers of Spanish football, the club got promoted to La Liga for the first time in 2004. Since then, Getafe, which plays its games in the Estadio Coliseum, has competed in La Liga for all but one year.

Getafe CF shares a strong local rivalry with neighbouring club CD Leganés, as both teams are based in the Madrid metropolitan area and compete for regional pride. Considering the huge influence of Atlético and Real Madrid in the region, Getafe is used to fighting for its place and has developed an ability to punch above its weight. Their biggest success was reaching the Copa del Rey final twice (in 2007 and 2008), and the following European campaign that included a run to the UEFA Cup quarter-finals, cemented their status as fierce competitors in both domestic and international arenas.
