Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored eleven goals during the qualifying phase, finishing as the second-highest overall scorer , including three in the play-off against Denmark that sent Sweden to France. On 21 June 2016, Ibrahimovic announced his retirement from international football after UEFA Euro 2016 , bringing the curtain down on a career that produced 62 goals in 122 international appearances, making him Sweden's all-time top scorer. During the group stage Sweden drew with Ireland, then lost to Italy and Belgium, and did not advance. A bitter end for a generation that deserved at least one more round.
