Black was a bold choice for Ireland away, and Umbro committed to it fully. Released in March 2013, this shirt arrived carrying a deliberate message: a new generation was coming through, and the design, with its subtle black and charcoal grey body stripe, smart black collar trimmed in white, and detail stitching in the colours of the Irish tricolour, looked the part. It was worn through a bruising FIFA 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign in Group C, where Ireland faced Germany, Sweden and Austria, and ultimately fell short of Brazil. The campaign's defining individual moment belonged to Robbie Keane, who wore this shirt to become Ireland's most-capped player ever on his 126th appearance against the Faroe Islands in June 2013, scoring a hat-trick in the same game to bring his international tally to 59 goals. A campaign that deserved a different ending, captured in a shirt that still turns heads.
