Bayer 04 Leverkusen

Founded in 1904, Bayer 04 Leverkusen has grown into one of the most consistently competitive sides in German football. The team is known as "Die Werkself" (The Factory Team) as a result of their roots in Bayer.

During the late 1990s and early 2000s, Leverkusen’s story was marred by near-misses, earning it the nickname "Vizekusen" (Neverkusen) for finishing as runners-up numerous times. This period was defined by players such as Michael Ballack, Lúcio, and Bernd Schneider, helping establish the club as a regular presence at the top of the Bundesliga and in Europe, though never winning it all.

In 2023-2024, Leverkusen cast off the Neverkusen moniker by putting together a remarkable season. Under coach Xabi Alonso, the team, led by Granit Xhaka and Florian Wirtz, put together an “Invincibles” season in the Bundesliga, going undefeated to become champions for the first time. They also won the DFB-Pokal for the second time in their history, with their only loss of the season coming in the Europa League Final against Atalanta.
